The Bergendal Rooibos processing plant is a joint venture between Bergendal Boerdery, Bergendal Worker Trust and Carmien Tea. Bergendal Rooibos is the world’s first Rooibos processing facility owned by farm workers. The 91 Farm workers form the majority of shareholders in Bergendal Rooibos and also have substantial shares in the Rooibos, Citrus, Deciduous and Wine grape farm, Maanskloof. This development gives impetus to Carmien Tea’s objective to incorporate workers from a primary production sector into value adding activities to enable higher skilled and thus higher paid employment opportunities. This also ensure a guaranteed level of quality control, full trace-ability and food safety.
